What This Site is About
Hello world!
This website is meant to be a place for my personal thoughts on technology.
For music content check out http://andrewsneedmusic.com.
I’ve had a life-long interest in tech that’s spanned the topics of audio engineering, web development, cyber-security, and cloud architecture. Usually my work and personal projects have intersected with at least two of these areas. Music has driven many of the vocational and lifestyle choices I’ve made as well as my technical projects.
This blog will reflect that.
Currently I’m working on two personal projects – the first in the world of cloud, and the second in the world of sound design.
My cloud project deals with handling the the huge video files I carry around with me on portable hard drives. This is absolutely the worst way to store media, yet most of the musicians I know do this, and I’m sure the same is true for many pro videographers.
Using DropBox or Drive or Box is a great way to break this habit, but I’d like to build a system that’s more media-aware, and can handle some of the encoding tasks that I have to do manually on my own workstation with ffmpeg. Going the Google route, I’m planning on implementing a flow in which videos are uploaded to GCS, triggering a pub/sub event that scales up a few Kubernetes pods to re-encode some of my clips concurrently.
My music project is much more broad in that it deals with sound design. I’ve had the FM8 VST for a few years now, and I’m finally getting the hang of the FM Synthesis sound design concepts, at least at the most basic level. I also just bought a Novation Peak, and I think the combination of working with FM8 on a computer screen and being able to get my hands on a piece of hardware will be great for building an intuition around sound design.
Anyway…
There’s more to come!
